Siān Martin


Siān Martin's ideas for her multi-media embroidery come from her interest in materials and ideas of memory. She is currently interested in using the Japanese method of shibori and computerised machine stitch to transform the textile surface.
Education
BA hons, Birmingham College of Art and Design having specialised in Embroidery within the Faculty of Textile Design. She undertook a year's postgraduate study leading to an M.A. in the same college before gaining an Art Teachers Diploma from the University of Leicester.
Memberships - Professional Groups
62 Group of Textile Artists: exhibiting member since 1974.
PSG - the 'Practical Study Group': a branch of the Embroiderer's Guild working within the educational field of embroidery.
Teaching
Sian Martin lectures and run workshops both in this country and abroad. She is a visiting lecturer at Somerset College of Art and Technology on the Textiles degree courses. Sian tutors a masterclass at Urchfont Manor College, Wiltshire.
Sian is the director and tutor 'Distant Stitch', an embroidery correspondence of City and Guilds Creative Studies with students throughout the world. www.distantstitch.co.uk
